Opioids are pain-relieving drug, which extract from opium poppy plant and is type of narcotic pain medication. Opioids substances produce morphine like effect by binding with opioids receptor in brain, spinal cord and other parts of body. Medically opioids are prescribed for pain relief, injuries, surgeries and chronic pain as cancer and used in anesthesia. Opioids include both opiates: including morphine, heroin, opium and codeine, which derived from opium poppy plants, some opioids are also available in synthetic form like methadone, hydrocodone. Medically prescribed opioids are:

  • Oxycodone
  • Methadone
  • Buprenorphine
  • Fentanyl
  • Morphine
  • Hydrocodon

What is Opioid Addiction?

Opioid addiction is chronic diseases that cause severe distress in individual’s personal, social and occupational life. Opioid addiction, characterized by strong, compulsive urge and cravings of opioid use although, there is no need medically. Many people abuse opioids because it has high potential of addiction. Other risk factors include of addiction are; Poverty, history of abuse in family, regular contact with high risk environment, people with history of chronic illness, accidents and surgeries in addition, women are more likely than men to dependent on prescribed opioids medication because they have some biological tendencies to do so.  Opioid addicts only give preference to getting and use drug over other aspects of life. Symptoms of opioid addiction are:

  • Poor coordination
  • Strong urges and craving of drug
  • Mood swings, Euphoria
  • Irritability and physical agitation
  • Abandoning responsibilities, lack of interest
  • Involving in immoral activities such as lying, cheating and stealing
  • Indecisiveness and lack of motivation
  • Changes in sleep patterns

Opioids binds with the receptor in brain so it changes the brain chemistry which developed the tolerance, that means addicts increases the dose of drug to get the same effect which he get in first use. Over the time person become dependent on drug, when he discontinue the drug it cause withdrawal symptoms which begin to appear within 24 hours after last use.
